Thank You Sensei, for your New Year’s wishes….And So Be It.
The Passage to New Year 2015 began with Sangha members in Shobo-Ji, zendo in New York, doing Zazen, chanting EMMEI JUKKU KANNON GYO ( Ten Phrase Life-Prolonging Kannon Sutra) 108 times and sharing potluck meal. Realization come this year that Present moment is all we have in this life to live fully and consciously. Train the mind, life with no drama, no worry, is the way to go.
May You all be in Peace & Harmony
Year of the Sheep 2015 dates starts from February 19 2015 up to February 7 2016. The 2015 Year of the Sheep falls under the element of Wood. The Sheep (Goat) is a Yin energy, a symbol of Peace, Harmonious co-existence and Tranquility. That is the primary and fundamental mood for this year. The Year of the Sheep is traditionally associated with a feeling of peace and contentment. World conflicts and political upheavals are predicted as less likely.
Generally, the pace of life becomes slowed, and people become more caring and emotional. The Sheep’s influence throughout the year also means that artistic endeavors are much favored along with volunteer work to help those less fortunate. New inventions or innovative ways to enhance existing products or services can also be expected. Special interest in education as a way toward future peace and prosperity will also be in sharp focus.
Direct translation of Komyo Reiki is Enlightenment Reiki.
The practice motto of Komyo Reiki is: “Place your hands”, “Surrender”, and “Smile”
Komyo Reiki is founded by Hyakuten Inamoto, Pure- land monk from Kyoto/ Japan, who learnt Reiki from Mrs. Yamaguchi. Mrs Yamaguchi was taught how to give Reiju from her uncle, who is one of Hayashi Sensei’s students.
Komyo: Great light or Enlightenment
Reiki: Energy of Universe
Kai: Association or group
Komyo Reiki Kai: the system Sensei Inamoto has created, presents Reiki as it was understood and commonly practiced in the 1930’s in Japan. This system places emphasis on spiritual unfoldment through the practice of Reiki Ryoho, aiming for satori or enlightenment.
There are four levels in Komyo Reiki Kai System.
Shoden (First Level): Basic knowledge about Reiki history and Reiki Ryoho, receiving Reiju (attunements) to become a Reiki practitioner, from then on Reiki energy will flow through out your hands and do a fine job of healing
Chuden(Second Level): Learn three “Shirushi”, Symbols, with the use of these symbols Reiki healing will become more practical and beneficial, learn how to do “distant healing”
Okuden(Third Level): Enter the inner teaching of Reiki Ryoho, focus on spiritual cultivation and growth learn one more final Shirushi(Reiki symbol), intend for Teacher candidates and/or Reiki practitioners who want to deepen an understanding of Reiki Ryoho and develop the inner growth, Will be given the forth shirushi or symbol after receiving Reiju
Shinpiden(Teacher/Shihan): Learn to become/be a teacher, there are some criteria…
The Majority of this year’s participants are returning/ repeating Shihans from last year’s Komyo Reiki Retreat. I am grateful of the trust and friendship seeded from last year’s reiki retreat, which formed this year’s group. We were in the period of Blue Moon, where energy generally was intense. Thunderstorm on Thursday (the day before the retreat starts) cleansed up all the residuals, resulted with power outage on Thursday night, while Sensei and myself were reviewing the agenda. We were told the power outage usually lasts few hours and asked by the monks, if we wish to stay over at monastery for the night. Power outage was affected in Joraku-an(wher I planned to spend the night on my own) and O-an cottage in the middle of the wood(where Sensei settled as a hermit during the period of reiki retreat). We lighted up candles and continued the process of reviewing Komyo Reiki Retreat’s agenda.
Then suddenly the generator stopped working, candles blowned out by whatever reason it was. I mentioned Sensei to use the flashlight in case he needs to go to his cottage. I could not find Sensei after I returned with the lighter, calling out for him was in vain, as if I was by myself in the dark of Joraku-An, residential stone guest house, once called Beecher’s House. A thought passed through in my mind “Is Sensei testing me? ” Reminding me that Sensei always find us when we’re waiting or expecting him, don’t need to look for him, he also knows if someone is calling on the phone and when this phone call comes in. This is based on several occasions when I am around Sensei or expecting to see him.
To resume the story, Sensei showed up after few minutes. When I asked where he was, Sensei replies ” there was no toilet flush, so I am trying to find out why, my answer was ” Sensei, the running water stopped as the generator stopped running. Power came back few minutes later!

If you’re a Reiki Master/Teacher from any lineage who seeks to deepen your practice, may I recommend an upcoming retreat? In August—August 23-25, to be exact—Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei will be coming from Japan to the U.S. to teach Komyo Reiki, the Reiki of Enlightenment, to a class of new Shihans (teachers) and returning Shihans (including yours truly).
Sensei is the Founder of Komyo Reiki, so you’ll have the unique opportunity to study the spiritual and Japanese sides of Reiki with the Founder of this lineage. I can assure you that it’s an extraordinary opportunity. But more, you’ll have the privilege of studying with Sensei in a very special place, Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a Zen monastery in the Catskills that looks exactly like the great mediaeval Japanese Zendos. The atmosphere is so extraordinary, you might feel that you encountered the ghost of Dogen Zenji, Founder of Soto Zen, around every corner!
If, like me, you’d read a lot about Zen but never practiced it, this weekend retreat will be a revelation. You get to sit zazen in an authentic setting every morning. You have the opportunity to chant, to experience walking Zen, to have a formal Zen breakfast. The setting is unbelievably beautiful, with woods and a lake, and there are shrines and healing sites on the property. In addition to the Reiki classes and lectures and the opportunity to experience authentic Zen practices, you’ll have time to enjoy the beautiful natural setting and the creatures you share it with. Not to mention making lots of new Reiki friends!
Sensei has been at pains to separate the truth of Usui Founder’s and Hayashi Sensei’s Reiki from the layers and legends that have grown around it, so what you’ll learn during this retreat is the simple, powerful truth. And ultimately, how you can use it to achieve the goal Usui Founder set, which is nothing less than enlightenment (satori). Sensei’s Reiki credentials are second to none. He studied with Mrs. Yamaguchi, a direct disciple of Chujiro Hayashi Sensei, and with Hiroshi Doi, a member of the Gakkai, the secret and exclusive Japanese Reiki society perpetuated by Usui Founder’s disciples upon his death. And he brings his knowledge as a Buddhist monk to bear as well, in the direct tradition of Usui Founder.
I can assure you from personal experience that this is an extraordinary opportunity for growth in the spiritual aspect of Reiki, whatever your background training or lineage. I invite you to join me and the other returning Shihans and new Shihans in August to stretch your, and our, concepts of Reiki as a path to enlightenment and enjoy a weekend immersion in Zen. I promise, you’ll never be the same!

We wrote down all what we wish to leave in 2012, on small piece(s) of paper, reciting purification chant and burnt it in Bon Fire.
The mountain & the lake were covered with tons of snow. Snow adds a sense of purification, with reflection of moon, Bon Fire and lantenes, transcend a magical moment on the night of New Year Eve on Dai Bosatsu Mountain. Embraced with gratitude for everything and everyone in my life and around me, I realized this is Reiki healing- healing & reiki. Gassho.
Thanks to Komyo Reiki Kai New England & Komyo Reiki Kai New York, Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei is back to New York. I was so happy to see him and to re-embrace his teaching. When myself hosted the Shinpiden Class at Komyo Reiki Retreat, I could not give full attention on his teachings as when I just sit in the class. Sensei’s presence brings peace and calm to those who are receptive and attentive. Just having Sensei around is a gift.
Karen (Komyo Reiki Kai New England) suggested we all visit 9/11 memorial. She carefully registered and printed a visitor pass for each of us. It was the first visit to all, who live in New York and lived through 9/11. It is very symbolic for me, visiting this memorial with Sensei and other Shihans. I never thought of or interested to go. In fact, I still have the image of twin towers collapsing in the smoke with plane going into them. I remember seeing this image on live from where I worked in Upper West Side and on television. It was the day, I did 3 shifts continuously as RN, since all public transport shut off.
Visit to 9/11 Memorial: We were a group of 5+ and no cab driver wants to drive us in one cab. There was a limo parked in front of the hotel, waiting for customer. Nechama got a very very reasonable price, so we all in the limo to visit 9/11 Memorial.
We all placed our hands on the plate(where all names are printed) of each tower, gave Reiki. It was meant to be, on this day, in company of Sensei and all Komyo Reiki Shihans, to be at 9/11 Memorial. And so it is.
Around 30 people attended Reiki history presented by Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei & Reiki Share on Friday evening, include retreat attendees RMTs, sangha members of Dai Bosatsu Zendo & Visitors.
All attendees have their name plates in Zendo, for Zazen. Some were very excited to see they have Zafu & Zabuton set of their own.
I am still touched by how all Reiki Masters cope with demanding schedule of class, 5 am wake up bell, early meditation(Zazen) and formal breakfast. We were honored by presence of the Abbot, Shinge Roshi, performing Morning Service, participating formal/ informal meals with our group.
Saturday night’s informal meal was over the top standard, to celebrate Sensei’s Birthday and another Sangha member Junko san’s. Surprise performance of Drums & dance by Baba Toni & Carmen, cheered up every one present. Thank you Manu & Lan San for inviting them.
I am grateful of every single person who asssited/ helped to make this event grandiose. Include are My teacher Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei, Peter (My spouse & life companion), Jodo San (head monk at DBZ), Yusen & Anne Dowling(Tenzo), all the monks, residents/ sanghas, Mark Dodd (Zen Transit/ Ohashiatsu Alumni) and all RMTs and spouse attended this Retreat.
Here are some updates as Komyo Reiki Retreat is approaching:
