If you’re a Reiki Master/Teacher from any lineage who seeks to deepen your practice, may I recommend an upcoming retreat? In August—August 23-25, to be exact—Hyakuten Inamoto Sensei will be coming from Japan to the U.S. to teach Komyo Reiki, the Reiki of Enlightenment, to a class of new Shihans (teachers) and returning Shihans (including yours truly).

Sensei is the Founder of Komyo Reiki, so you’ll have the unique opportunity to study the spiritual and Japanese sides of Reiki with the Founder of this lineage. I can assure you that it’s an extraordinary opportunity. But more, you’ll have the privilege of studying with Sensei in a very special place, Dai Bosatsu Zendo, a Zen monastery in the Catskills that looks exactly like the great mediaeval Japanese Zendos. The atmosphere is so extraordinary, you might feel that you encountered the ghost of Dogen Zenji, Founder of Soto Zen, around every corner!

If, like me, you’d read a lot about Zen but never practiced it, this weekend retreat will be a revelation. You get to sit zazen in an authentic setting every morning. You have the opportunity to chant, to experience walking Zen, to have a formal Zen breakfast. The setting is unbelievably beautiful, with woods and a lake, and there are shrines and healing sites on the property. In addition to the Reiki classes and lectures and the opportunity to experience authentic Zen practices, you’ll have time to enjoy the beautiful natural setting and the creatures you share it with. Not to mention making lots of new Reiki friends!

Sensei has been at pains to separate the truth of Usui Founder’s and Hayashi Sensei’s Reiki from the layers and legends that have grown around it, so what you’ll learn during this retreat is the simple, powerful truth. And ultimately, how you can use it to achieve the goal Usui Founder set, which is nothing less than enlightenment (satori). Sensei’s Reiki credentials are second to none. He studied with Mrs. Yamaguchi, a direct disciple of Chujiro Hayashi Sensei, and with Hiroshi Doi, a member of the Gakkai, the secret and exclusive Japanese Reiki society perpetuated by Usui Founder’s disciples upon his death. And he brings his knowledge as a Buddhist monk to bear as well, in the direct tradition of Usui Founder.

I can assure you from personal experience that this is an extraordinary opportunity for growth in the spiritual aspect of Reiki, whatever your background training or lineage. I invite you to join me and the other returning Shihans and new Shihans in August to stretch your, and our, concepts of Reiki as a path to enlightenment and enjoy a weekend immersion in Zen. I promise, you’ll never be the same!
